What is a buttock augmentation with fat grafting?

Do you wish you had more volume in your buttocks? Buttock augmentation with fat grafting could be the solution. The buttocks are enlarged and made more firm using the body’s own fatty tissue.

For this procedure, existing fatty tissue is removed by liposuction, which is then injected into the buttocks. This procedure is also known as lipofilling. Lipofilling only works when there is existing fat that can be removed. Also, because it is the body’s own tissue, there is no risk of it being rejected by the body.

Consultation

After your first consultation with the plastic surgeon, you will meet with our consultant. The purpose of this talk is to bring you up to date and inform you about everything to do with your treatment.

BUTTOCK AUGMENTATION WITH FAT GRAFTING

How is a buttock augmentation done with fat grafting?

When performing the buttock augmentation with fat grafting, no skin is removed. The plastic surgeon will inject a fluid using a small needle through incisions, half a centimetre long. This fluid helps to loosen the fat cells, reduce bleeding and numbs the underlying tissue. It takes about twenty minutes for this fluid to take effect. After the twenty minutes, the plastic surgeon will insert a suction needle through the incisions just under the skin. By moving the needle back and forth, the fat is removed. Fatty tissue is usually removed from the thighs, hips or the abdomen. This technique is called liposuction.

The removed fatty tissue is cleansed in a centrifuge. Subsequently, the healthy fat cells are then added to the areas where you wish to have more volume, through lipofilling. Once the correction has been completed to the satisfaction of the plastic surgeon, the small incisions are closed using small soluble sutures.

You must remove everything that is loose, in or on your body just before the operation. For example, dentures or other removable prosthetics in the mouth, contact lenses and/or a hearing aid.

What can I expect after having had a buttock augmentation done with fat grafting?

After your buttock augmentation has been successfully completed and you have been allowed to go home, you mustn’t rush into things. Normal physical activity is fine but try to avoid strenuous work for the first six weeks. In other words, no intense sports and no lifting of heavy objects during the recovery period. Also, try to sleep on your side or your stomach. You will be contacted by a member of staff from the practice the day after your operation. They will inquire as to how you are doing and ask if you have any questions. They will also make an appointment with you for your first check-up with the doctor.

After the operation, your buttocks will be painful, and you will experience pressure and a pulling sensation. It is also normal to have some painful bruising, swollen skin and to feel sore. These discomforts normally disappear on their own after two to six weeks. Always contact us should you be concerned.

The body needs to recover before you can see the changes. Within a week, you should have a fairly good idea of the effects of the treatment. The definitive results won’t be visible until after a year. The skin, in particular, will need time to tighten; however, the new contours of your body are permanent. The fat that has been removed will not return. Yet, if you eat too much, the remaining fat cells will then grow again, and so will you.

Liposuction is not a technique to lose weight. To be able to enjoy your figure the most, we advise everybody to eat healthily and to get enough exercise.

For a wound to heal beautifully, quickly and as nicely as possible, it must get enough oxygen-rich blood going through it. That’s why we advise you not to smoke before the operation. The nicotine in the cigarettes narrows the blood vessels which in turn reduces the blood flow to the wound. Also, tobacco smoke contains carbon monoxide which restricts the amount of oxygen in the blood. Smoking also affects your fitness levels and weakens your immune system.
Did you know that complications happen more often for those who smoke than those who don’t? Therefore, we advise you to stop smoking at least four weeks before the operation and to continue not smoking until at least two weeks afterwards.
