What is feminisation?

To feminise a body means that you undergo certain treatments to give your body a more feminine appearance. With a ‘feminine appearance,’ we mean the appearance that our society sees as typically female.

When it comes to gender expression, you can make the necessary changes on the surface by changing your clothing, hair and posture, and yet, a lot of transgender people (who were born in a male body) choose to have changes made to their body to fit their own gender sense.

Even after years of hormone therapy, most transgender women don’t have enough breast tissue for a feminine profile. As a result, many want to have a breast augmentation done. All of which is possible at Care Clinic.

TRANSGENDER BEFORE AND AFTER

How is a breast augmentation performed on a transgender person?

Using three incisions a breast prosthetic is inserted behind the breast muscle: through a small incision in the armpit, one on the edge of the areola, or in the folds under the breasts.

A wider-based prosthetic is often chosen for transgender women. They are inserted in the middle and as close to each other as possible. Due to the natural position of the nipples (more outwards) and the slightly wider chest, it is often inevitable that the breasts will be spaced a little further apart than on the average biological woman.

When you smoke, we strongly recommend that you stop smoking at least four weeks before your operation date.

TRANSGENDER

What are the advantages of a breast augmentation for a transgender person?

  • Accentuates your femininity
  • Your body fits your own gender sense
  • Operation takes an hour
  • Recovery is seven to 14 days.

When am I, as a transgender person, a suitable candidate for a treatment?

The surgeon will determine during your first consultation if you are a good candidate and which procedures will be necessary to help you achieve a more feminine appearance.  Male breast tissue does not differ that much from female breast tissue; therefore, there is actually little difference between a breast augmentation for a transgender person or a genetic woman.

Genetic women do have more fatty tissue in their breasts than trans women do. However, if you take a course of female hormones, this can substantially increase the amount of fatty tissue.

Consultation

During your first consultation, we will discuss what this procedure entails. We will also discuss what bothers you the most about your body and what you would like to do about this. You will also be informed about the various methods and operating techniques used. We will find out which procedure best meets your needs and inform you about what you can expect in terms of end results, the possible risks and the necessary aftercare. You will always receive honest advice and be informed clearly about the treatment and what needs to be done in the period afterwards.

During your first consultation, the plastic surgeon will also check to see if you are a suitable candidate for a breast augmentation. The surgeon will ask you questions regarding your health, medical history and any possible medication you may be using. Should you use blood thinners, then you should stop using them at least one week before the treatment.

What can I expect, as a transgender person, after a breast augmentation?

  • You may take a shower the day after the operation. Make sure that the wound stays dry. The bandages are waterproof and can be dabbed dry.
  • Leave the bandages on for three weeks. The bandages are placed on top of the sutures. The sutures will dissolve on their own and may not be removed. You will have your first check-up, three weeks after your operation and any possible knots in the sutures will be cut away.
  • Wear a good support, post-operative bra without any underwire. The bra shouldn’t be too tight but fit snugly. The bra should be worn all the time – day and night – for the first six weeks after the operation.
  • Make sure you take plenty of rest and avoid any physically strenuous activities – such as cleaning the house: (vacuuming, cooking or lifting heavy objects). You should not raise your arms and do any sports during the first two weeks after your operation.
  • You may not go swimming or visit a sauna for the first six weeks after your operation.
  • You should avoid direct sunlight for the first two weeks after your surgery. You should protect the scar from the sun for the first year so that it will not change colour.
  • Should you experience any redness, swelling, or develop a fever, or have an open wound, or should there be any other concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Praktijk Diana Gabriels.
